Conservation & Social Responsibility

  • Gold_Rating_-_Transparent_BackgroundElephant Pepper Camp leases land from the community and pays its fees directly to the landowners.
  • Most of our staff are employed from the surrounding community.
  • In 2007, Elephant Pepper Camp successfully raised the funds to build a new classroom at the nearby Ololomei Primary School. In 2009, we built a kitchen and, in 2010, we supplied the whole school with desks and chairs.
  • From Camp, visits to the local villages can be arranged, during which our guests come into direct contact with the Maasai and have the opportunity to build friendships, giving tourism a real face.
  • Elephant Pepper uses a combination of old fashioned safari camp ways with latest renewable technologies to achieve environmental best practice. The camp, almost invisible under the Elephant Pepper trees, has a minimal footprint, using no concrete, and could be completely removed to leave a virgin site. We rely 100% on solar power, have fitted the camp entirely with LED lighting.
  • Rubbish is responsibly disposed of or recycled. Glass is separated and sold to the recycling plant 'Central Glass' in Nairobi. All funds are donated to the East African Women's League to support a family planning program managed by the North Lake Branch, Naivasha.
  • Elephant Pepper Camp is one of only 3 camps in the whole country to be awareded a "Gold Level" rating by Eco Tourism Kenya.

The Mara North Conservancy

elephconsimg

Elephant Pepper Camp has been the main driving force behind the establishment of the Mara North Conservancy (MNC), covering over 70,000 acres from Aitong to Musiara, a primary area within the greater Masai Mara eco-system. By allocating the land solely to wildlife conservation, this newly formed conservancy is home to some of the Mara's best game viewing. MNC guarantees stable revenue in the form of lease fees to its 750 Masai landowners combined with transparent financial management, as well as encompassing and preserving the ancient balance between traditional pastoralism and wildlife.

For nearly 20 years, Elephant Pepper Camp has worked alongside the Masai community, with the creation of the Mara North Conservancy being only the most recent development in protecting this vital ecosystem. The Camp works closely with the community, government and stake holders, participating in or spearheading numerous development initiatives, such as "Water from Wildlife" supplying schools with water whist preserving the fragile eco-system, and helping people move and transport renewable building materials so as to reduce the occurrance of tree felling.
